The Emotional Journey of Implementing Profit First

This week, I want to talk about something we don’t often discuss: the emotional journey you go through when implementing Profit First in your business.

At Gro, we’ve worked with dozens of business owners, and what I’m sharing here isn’t theory—it’s based on real experience from me and the team.

Whether you’ve fully implemented Profit First, half-started it, or are just Profit First curious, this will give you something to think about.

🚗 It’s Like Following a Roadmap (with a few wrong turns)

Think back to before we had Google Maps. I used to print off the RAC Route Planner and hope for the best. Inevitably, Becky and I would be squinting at directions, trying to figure out if we’d missed a turn. It was frustrating—but expected.

Same goes for implementing something new like Profit First. If you know there are bumps in the road, you’re better prepared to handle them.

🚀 Stage 1: Excitement

When people start Profit First, they’re buzzing. We’re excited for them too—because we know what’s possible.

Whether it’s doubling profit, finally paying yourself properly, or just getting your finances under control, it’s genuinely life-changing.

There’s dopamine flying everywhere. You’re full of optimism, energy and “let’s do this!”

😩 Stage 2: Reality Hits

Fast forward a few months and... it hasn’t magically fixed everything yet.

Cash is still tight. You haven’t quite got the Florida holiday booked. That initial buzz wears off, and confidence starts to dip.

This is the point where people often get stuck—they feel like a failure, or blame themselves. Some even blame us! And sometimes, they give up.

⛰️ The Valley of Despair

Most people don’t implement Profit First fully. They set up a profit pot, but not a VAT pot. They skip the tax pot. They don’t move the money regularly. They dabble, then wonder why it’s not working.

This is the valley of despair.

You’re not a failure. You’re just in the middle of the process. It’s meant to be hard. That’s where we come in—as your coach, not just your accountant. We’ve been through this journey, and we guide you through it too.

💪 Stage 3: Discipline and Progress

Think of it like the gym.

January hits—you’re pumped, new kit, new goals. A few weeks in? It gets tough. Most people drop off.

But if you stick with it—with the right programme and accountability—you’ll see real results. Slowly but surely, you’ll crawl out of the valley and start climbing.

You won’t solve every problem overnight, but everything becomes easier. You’ve broken through.

🧠 Bonus Thought: Beware the Comfort Zone

Even those who have implemented Profit First successfully can become too comfortable.

Like someone going to the gym every week but only giving it 60%. They show up, but they’re scrolling their phone between sets. Don’t coast.

If you’re not challenging yourself, you’re not growing.
